Short forms

Dấu ' thường được dùng trong hình thức viết tắt của từ.

am → 'm  

has → 's

is → 's                          

had → 'd

are → 're   

will → 'll

have → 've                    

would → 'd

I've got some new shoes.

(Tôi vừa mua giày mới).

We'll probably go out this evening.

(Có lẽ chúng tôi sẽ đi ra ngoài tối nay).

's = is hoặc has:

She's going to have a day off. (she's going = she is going).

(Cô ấy sẽ nghỉ một ngày).

She's gone out. (she's gone = she has gone).

(Cô ấy đã đi ra ngoài).

'd = would hoặc had:

A: What would you like to eat?

B: I'd like salad, please.

(A: Bạn muốn dùng gì?

 B: Tôi muốn salad). 

I told the police that I'd lost my passport.

(Tôi đã nói với cảnh sát rằng tôi bị mất hộ chiếu).

Lưu ý: Không dùng hình thức viết tắt 'm/ 's/ 'd ở cuối câu.

Are you tired? - Yes, I am.  (not "Yes, I'm")

Negative short forms

is not → isn't                            

can not → can't                                      

are not → aren't                        

could not → couldn't                            

does not → doesn't

was not → wasn't                      

will not → won't                                      

did not → didn't

were not → weren't                    

would not → wouldn't 

has not → hasn't                        

should not → shouldn't

have not → haven't                    

must not → mustn't

had not → hadn't                        

need not → needn't

We went to her house but she wasn't at home.

(Chúng tôi đã đến nhà cô ấy nhưng cô ấy không có ở nhà).

Where's David? - I don't know. I haven't seen him.

(David đâu rồi? - Tôi không biết. Tôi không thấy anh ấy).

You work all the time. You shouldn't work so hard.

(Bạn làm việc nhiều quá. Bạn không nên làm việc quá sức).

I won't be here tomorrow.

(Ngày mai tôi sẽ không ở đây).

's (apostrophe + s):

(1)  's = is hoặc has.

(2)  Let's = let us.

The weather is nice. Let's go out.

(Thời tiết thì tốt. Chúng ta hãy đi ra ngoài).

(3) 's = of (sở hữu cách).

Jane's bag is dirty.

(Túi của Jane bị dơ).

Hãy so sánh 3 ví dụ sau:

Ann's camera was very expensive. (Ann's camera = her camera)

(Máy ảnh của Ann thì rất đắt). 

Ann's a very good photographer. (Ann's = Ann is)

(Ann là một nhiếp ảnh gia giỏi). 

Ann's got a new camera. (Ann's = Ann has got) 

(Ann vừa mua một cái máy ảnh mới).
