On October 4th, 1957 Moscow radio broadcast the news of the tremendous achievement, the former Soviet Union launched the world’s first artificial satellite. The Russian word “sputnik” in one day became an international word. Since that time, the former Soviet Union has launched many other heavier sputniks and rockets to trail the path of man to the planets and the stars.

The whole world was waiting for the first manned space flight. Few people doubted that it would happen in the former Soviet Union. Nevertheless, the actual flight came as a complete surprise. On April 12th 1961 a Soviet pilot, Yuri Gagarin, took mankind’s first step into space. This historical event has proved that man can reach out and touch the distant stars and discover the secrets of the universe...

Trong thế kỷ 19 và 20 có nhiều khám phá quan trọng trong y khoa. Ví dụ, năm 1895 một bác sĩ người Đức tên là Roentgen đã phát triển máy chụp tia X. Nhà khoa học người Anh Alexander Flemming đã khám phá ra penicillin, loại thuốc kháng sinh đầu tiên, vào năm 1928. Kháng sinh là thuốc diệt các chứng bệnh trong cơ thể. Flemming đã khám phá ra penicillin đang sinh sôi trong nấm mốc trên miếng bánh mì cũ! Những sự cải tiến khác cũng đã được thực hiện trong lãnh vực kỳ thuật y khoa. Bác sĩ có thề cứu mạng người bằng cách ghép cho họ con tim hay quả thận mới. Bệnh viện có máy vi tính lớn và các máy móc giúp cho người bệnh sống tốt hơn. Y khoa ngày nay rất hiện đại nhưng cũng rất truyền thống ở vài nơi trên thế giới. Ở Trung Quốc và các quốc gia Châu Á khác, bác sĩ dùng châm cứu, một phương pháp cũ xưa để chữa bệnh và đau nhức. Châm cứu là dùng kim để giúp cơ thể người chống lại bệnh tật và đau đớn. Các thầy thuốc đã sừ dụng phương pháp này hàng ngàn năm và một số bác sĩ vẫn còn dùng nó ngày nay.

MARK TWAIN (1835 - 1910)

Mark Twain was known as one of the greatest American writers. His real name was Samuel Longhorn Clemens. He was bom in Missouri in 1835. He grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River. He started writing during the Civil War. He worked as a newspaperman in Nevada and California. In 1870, Mark Twain married Olivia Langdon. His wife had great influence on his books. Mark Twain was also a famous lecturer. He traveled around the country, giving talks on a variety of subjects. His best works are “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry” and another book “Life on the Mississippi” which told of his adventures on the river boats of his era. His last novel was written in 1909. He died at the age of 74.
