Dish/plate/course

1. Dish /di∫/ (n): 

= A food container for cooking or serving food: đĩa đựng thức ăn.

= Items used in cooking and serving food: bát đĩa.

Ví dụ:

I need a large dish to serve this food from. (not 'plate')

(Tôi cần một cái đĩa to để đựng thức ăn).

= One item of prepared food: món ăn đã được nấu.

Ví dụ:

Steak and kidney pie is a traditional English dish. (not 'plate/course')

(Bít tết và bầu dục là một món ăn truyền thống của Anh).

A standing dish: món ăn thường ngày.

A dish of tea: tách trà.

A dish of gossip: cuộc tán gẫu.

2. Plate /pleit/ (n):

= A flat thing for serving and eating food; it is always the object not the food on it: đĩa, không có thức ăn trên đó.

Ví dụ: 

Could me bring me a clean plate please? (not 'dish')

(Anh làm ơn lấy cho tôi một cái đĩa sạch?)

A soup plate: đĩa súp.

A plate of beef: đĩa thịt bò.

Gold/silver plate: đồ mạ vàng/bạc.

On one's plate: choán thời gian.

Hand/give somebody something on a plate.

(Trao cho ai cái gì mà không cần bất cứ sự nỗ lực nào từ phía anh ta).

3. Course /kɔ:s/ (n):

A course is part of the sequence of a meal: the first course, second course/the main course, the last couise: một món ăn là một phần của bữa ăn, món đầu, món chính, món cuối).

Ví dụ:

Do you want spaghetti as a starter or as your main course?

(Anh muốn dùng món mì ống để ăn khai vị hay ăn chính?)

The main course was a vegetable stew.

(Món chủ yếu là rau hầm).

The ship is on her right course.

(Con tàu đi đúng hướng).

A five-courses dinner: bữa ăn tối có năm món.

The course of events: quá trình diễn biến các sự kiện.

The course of a river: dòng sông.
