Following the hight -T_c copper oxide superconductors, another class of transition metal oxides, the manganites, have prompted an explosion of research activity int the last decade. Motivated initially by the colossal magnetoresistance phenomena, more recent studies have revealed an extremely rich phase diagram originating from the interplay of charge, lattice, orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom.
